I’ve never really understood racism, certainly not in the pure, raw salsa-like flavour that is Nazism. I suppose that’s why the Hammered Festival is such an odd occurrence to me. It’s obvious that it’s more of a political movement than it is a music festival, but I am still unsure as to how it would work. Would people pledge allegiance to the grand dragon wizard overlord or whatever dungeons and dragons character is popular, then listen to some tunes and then blame the price of beer on non-whites? I mean what’s the end result here? If it’s simply a physical manifestation of people who enjoy Nazism, then is a music festival the most efficient and cost effective form of displaying their stupid ideology?
I feel there are alternatives they aren’t exploring, like a Neo-Nazi run ice-cream parlour. Seeing a gaggle of skin heads eating Vanilla ice-creams and glaring at people is far more disturbing than a music festival. What if they ran a Wet n Wild style theme park? Nazi’s swimming! What a disturbing thought.
From purely a musical perspective, I cannot image Hammered Festival bringing a tremendous range of talent to their skull-laced stages. Then again I don’t own a Union Flag nor do I loathe people who aren’t white – so what do I know?
This is what I do know. Shabazz Palaces are playing tonight. It’ll be an intimate show and it’ll showcase amazing talent of the hip-hop variety.
